Your Puppy And Training

It's time for some enjoyment and fun. To become a team, you and your puppy will have to learn a few of the basic skills. You have to carefully mold your dog into the kind of dog you can be proud of. A well trained puppy is a joy to be around.

Rewards And Training

The most positive method you will use during the puppy training is the reward method. Food and treats will be the main reward in the beginning. Little cut up pieces of hot dogs treats are used most. A lot of praise and love is another reward that should be freely given. Staying up beat and positive is very important to remember for keeping your puppy happy.

Your puppy will learn to sit, down and heel as these are three basic commands. To keep control of your puppy, these commands will be very important. Socialization of your puppy will be much easier when he begins to listen to you through proper training. A puppy's attention span is short so you will need to keep the sessions short in the beginning, 10 to 15 minutes. It won't be long before you will gradually lengthen the training sessions.

The Leash And Your Puppy

While holding the treat in front of your puppy's nose with your left hand, and the leash in your right hand, leash training begins. Before you give the heel command, in a happy, upbeat voice, say the puppy's name. Become a human pez-dispencer, dishing out the treats and encouragement to keep the puppy walking beside you. If the puppy should stop, just continue to hold the treat in front of him and gently tug the leash. It won't be long and the leash and collar won't bother the pup at all.

Teaching The Sit

Holding the treat in front of the puppy's nose and then bringing the treat up and over his head, the pup should sit, this is the best method. Use the word sit while practicing this. The sit can be taught anytime, just take one or two minutes and practice it during a commercial.

The Down

To begin teaching the puppy the down, he should first be sitting, then while holding the treat by his nose, bring your hand all the way down then forward. Always use the command down when you begin in the downward motion with the food.

Patience and consistency will be required to train your puppy. Some puppies will pick things up quickly and some others will take a little longer. When your puppy is doing these things with the verbal commands and not treats, it will be time to learn more. Remember, stay happy and upbeat, you will see results soon. A happy home equals a well trained puppy.
