What is IPTV?
IPTV is an acronym for Internet Protocol Television. In IPTV, the television utilizes internet instead of traditional method like cable. IPTV is one of the recently introduced internet based application streams into the television space. Alternatively we can watch TV channels in our PC also and there is no need for buying TV. IPTV uses a two-way digital broadcast signal, sent through a switched telephone or cable network by way of a broadband connection and a set top box programmed with software, that can handle viewer requests to access TV channels, download movies and programmes.
Advantages of IPTV
IPTV can be packaged and bundled with other internet protocol based services like VoIP. Secondly IPTV consumes much less bandwidth that cable TV. This is because in the case of cable, all the channels are carried to the TV and what is shown on the screen is what is chosen. In the case of IPTV, only what is tuned in is transferred. As there is a storage facility in IPTV, the viewer can also retrieve the programs later on.
IPTV is immune to noise, ghosting, reflections and cross modulation, which are common to the cable based TV programmes. Even though the DTH is offering a better quality output, IPTV scores the best in terms of picture quality.
The IPTV services are offered by telecom service providers in India and it is already available in selected cities. The installation of IPTV is similar to installing broadband connection. We can use the same connection in any number of TV sets at home and PC without paying any additional charges.
IPTV technology also provides innovative waterproof bathroom televisions. These TVs can safely be used in shower and are increasingly popular with luxury hotels.
Triple Play
This will lead to the convergence of entertainment, internet and voice communication into one. The commercial bundling of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access is called Triple Play. The technology is being touted as the next big thing in broadband and is becoming popular in advanced countries.
