What Do We Need For Our Wormery Compost?
First thing first, we need materials before we can get started on making a wormery.
The first thing we need to find is a container. This can be a plastic tub, a metal box, etc. What is important is that it is cannot absorb or decompose easily like say, a cardboard box. We want our container, we call this a compost bin, to be about one foot tall and anywhere from 4 feet by 4 feet to 5 by 5. This compost bin will house the entire project. It's important that you try to keep the size of the bin manageable so that you can carry the compost indoors or out depending on the weather.
The next material we need for making a wormery is the bedding that will go inside our compost bin. This is the easiest part of the project. Go find some old newspapers or recycled printer paper. Shred this up. Viola! You just made your wormery compost bedding! A few more things you could use could be cut up cardboard, grass clippings, fallen leaves, or even dead plants.
Now here's a key point to keep in mind when making a wormery: your bedding must be damp! Wormery worms need to be able to wriggle about easily to keep the compost production running quickly and smoothly. Make sure your bedding is moist. You will want enough bedding to fill your wormery compost to about 3/4 full.
And we're done! Now that we're done making a wormery, we need to find a place for the compost bin. Worms survive best between 40-80 F. This is why the container should be easily portable. You may need to bring your compost indoors during extreme temperatures on either side of the thermometer. Otherwise, it is perfectly fine to keep your wormery compost outdoors.
