subject: How People Search And Different Types Of Queries [print this page]

Searching is a bit of an art formSearching is a bit of an art form. Some people still search for mainly generic terms while other people, becoming more practiced in the discipline of how search engines find and retrieve data, create more specific queries designed to produce more accurate results. Its important when performing keyword research on your website to consider the different ways that people search for products, information or websites online its also important to identify the intent behind these queries to get a gauge on the types of queries you should be targeting to your website.

There are, in essence, three types of queries: the navigational query, the information query and the transactional query. All three types of queries are represented by different forms of intent on the part of the user performing the query and its important to look at each one in detail to get a better idea on how it can impact your keyword research document. The navigation query is essentially a brand search, a user performing this type of query is looking for a specific website or page, and likely has the particular brand in mind. A good example of a navigational query is Dell or Facebook.

The informational query is one performed in search of some specific piece of information. For example, a user may be searching for information on World War 2 or the latest football results from that evening. Its important to note that these types of queries are less likely to convert than other forms of queries. Its also important to note that Google is ever-evolving, and has increasingly come to offer this information within its Search Engine Results Pages e.g. Weather in Boston.

The final type of query is the transactional query, this type of query is performed whenever the user is looking to make a purchase. Needless to say, these types of queries, along with brand queries, are the queries most likely to convert into sales for your website. An example of a transactional query could be Payday Loans Apply Now.
