5 Ways to Combat Stress at Work
Work-related stress has become an everyday part of American's lives. From late hours to limited vacation days, in this economy we are extending ourselves more than ever. The Survivors Club spoke with Beth Roth, founder of B.well Health Coaching, about how to beat the stress of the daily grind. Read more for her tips, and visit her site at bwellhealthcoaching.com. Set the Stage for a Stress-Free Day
You can set the stage for a reduced-stress day first thing in the morning. "I always start my day with some quick yoga," says Roth. It helps to specifically concentrate on stretches and breathing, which are both calming and energizing for the body and mind. Find something that brings you happiness and peace in the morning to help reduce stress at the start of the day. Roth says she "takes a few minutes to watch my daughter sleep before I leave for work. Just listening to her breathe and watching her so content always brings me to a calm place!"
Avoid Stressful Commutes to and From Work
Sometimes just getting to work is the most stressful part of the day. Roth suggests avoiding the commuter stress by "waking up in plenty of time to get to work" and you won't be rushed and anxious. Build in time in the morning for exercise. Roth adds, "I always bring an iPod on the bus so I can listen to music." And try not to work during your commute unless you absolutely have to. Finally, eating a healthy and well-balanced breakfast will help keep your blood sugar -- and your stress -- in check.
Don't Partake in Office Gossip
"Don't gossip, it's the worst thing and can cause so much stress in a work environment," advises Roth. When you start a new job or meet new co-workers, try to set boundaries about your personal space and expectations right away. Try bringing in healthy snacks for the office -- food brings people together and takes our mind off stress. "I've organized a yoga and pilates class for lunch time or after work," Roth said. "It lessens office stress."
Avoid Late Nights at The Office
Taking on extra work that keeps you at the office late into the night -- especially if it's not part of your job description -- can add to stress at work. Roth advises "remove yourself from your workday" at the end of the day, and it will help relieve some of the stress at work.
Step Away From Your Desk
If you work in an office, sitting in the same chair and staring at your computer all day can cause stress on your body. Roth suggests "try to take a few mental breaks throughout the day." Walking for a healthy snack like Greek yogurt and almonds, doing some deep breathing on a bench outside, or even getting a 10 minute mini massage at a local nail salon can be a huge stress relief. Make it a daily habit to take your favorite health magazine or book to a quite place and read during lunch.
