subject: Why Boise State Will Destroy Virginia Tech [print this page] Why Boise State Will Destroy Virginia Tech
Boise State is not a big conference powerhouse. They are, however, coming off an undefeated season. Virginia Tech is a big conference powerhouse. They are also notorious for facing off against power programs to kick off the season, as evidented by their games against Alabama last season, LSU in 2006, and USC in 2004. Virginia Tech is not afraid to schedule a tough game to set their season off in the right direction, and usually it works. However, I think the game against Boise State to kick off the season for Virginia Tech this season is going to set the season off on the wrong foot this time.
Boise defeated two nationally ranked teams in TCU and Oregon to cap their undefeated season last year. While they have often been dismissed as not playing anybody good ever, they proved last year that they can hang with the big boys. The scary part of the equation for Virginia Tech is, this is the same Boise State team that they are going to be facing off against, as they return an astonishing 23 of 24 starters on both sides of the ball. By the way, the one who didn't return was a first round draft pick in the NFL Draft.
While Boise is sound defensively, it is the dynamic offensive scheme that has lifted them to the majority of their wins last season. Typically, that would not be a problem for a Virginia Tech defense that is typically one of the best in the nation. This year, however, may not be the case, as Boise State gets to face off against a Virginia Tech defense that is very young and very inexperienced. Combined with the fact that Virginia Tech's offense this spring has looked bland, and uninspired, it is going to be a long day for Virginia Tech.
The Boise offense is explosive and shifty, able to generate the big play. It also has power in between the tackles, and can punch you in the nose in that regards too. They have many ways to score the ball, and Virginia Tech's inexperienced defense is not going to be ready to face an offense of this caliber for the first game of the season. Virginia Tech's offense isn't going to be enough just yet, either, should the game turn into a NorthBet.com point spread shootout.
I don't think it will, though. Boise should win this one big. 48-21.
