Many parents have been successful using a bedwetting alarm to cure their child's primary nocturnal enuresis. Although bedwetting alarms come in a variety of different makes, models and colors, they are all designed to do the same thing - that is alert the wearer as soon as urination starts. There are three basic types on the market - the wearable bedwetting alarm, wireless bedwetting alarm and bed pad and alarm.1. Wearable Bedwetting AlarmOne of the most popular types of bedwetting alarms for children are the wearable alarms. A small lightweight alarm unit is worn attached to the child's nightwear, near the collar bone. The alarm unit is connected to a sensor via a cord, which clips to the child's underwear. The wearable alarm is thought to be the most effective type of bedwetting alarm because the unit is so close to the ear. This means the wearer is instantly alerted when urination commences. This is part of the learning process and the brain is slowly conditioned into recognizing a full bladder.2. Wireless Bedwetting AlarmWireless bedwetting alarms have a transmitter which sends a wireless signal to the receiver (alarm) when moisture is detected. The receiver can be placed on a bedside table, or across the room requiring the child to get out of bed to turn it off. This prevents them from simply turning it off and going back to sleep.Certain brands of wireless models require the user to wear special underwear which is designed to detect moisture. Other brands allow the user to wear their own underwear and moisture is detected by a clip-on sensor. Wireless bedwetting alarms seem to be popular with older children and teenagers who may not want to wear a shirt to bed or who do not want wires across their body. They can work well for children who have intermittent wetting and who do not wet the bed every night.3. Bed Pad and AlarmThis type of bedwetting alarm has a pad or mat which has sensor strips embedded within it to detect moisture. The child sleeps on the mat and when wetting is detected, the alarm unit will sound alerting the child and parent. The alarm unit is usually attached to the side of the bed and is connected to the bed pad by a cord. A child will usually need to be very wet in order for the alarm to be triggered. A bed pad and alarm would be suitable for children who for some reason cannot get along with a wearable bedwetting alarm.Today bedwetting alarms are manufactured in a variety of colors which appeal to children. Some have a single tone whilst others offer a choice of more than one sound plus the option to add vibration. Some alarms have a function which lets a parent record music or a personal message. Some parents have found that a recording of their own voice has been more effective at waking their children than other stimulus options such as sound, vibration or flashing lights.Bedwetting is common in school age children however, if your child has a bedwetting problem, it is always advisable to have him or her checked by your doctor to ensure there are no medical reasons for the bedwetting.
