Miracle of the Umbrellas:

A Perfect Example

May 13, 2010

Dear Mom:

I see Uncle John and Aunt Julie had quite a scare the other day. I'm glad Joey doesn't have any permanent physical damage, although I'm sure that he will carry the experience with him. While it was a horrible experience to live through, there was quite an unbelievable out pouring of love that was demonstrated that all too often is not recognized or seen in the hectic and sometime chaotic life on earth.

The day the incident occurred was a cool and drizzly morning, the kind that sends shivers through you just by looking out the window at it. Other than the weather, the morning started out as any normal school day; waking up the three boys, showers, breakfast and packing of lunches. Nothing unusual that could predict how the day's events would suddenly go terribly amiss.

As Uncle John watched, the bus came to a stop and the bus driver waved Joey on to cross the road. For reasons known only to the driver coming up behind the bus, she ignored the red flashing lights and the stop signs that stick out on the sides of the bus. She drove around the bus as though it was parked at the same moment Joey had entered the intersection. The car struck Joey sending him skidding down the road some 20 feet rendering him unconscious and badly hurt. Uncle John saw the car approaching, saw the women drive around the stopped bus and saw his son bounce like a rag doll down the road unable to do anything except run out to him as fast as his shaking legs would take him.

Worried for neck and back injuries, Uncle John touched Joey's limp body carefully with the thought that his son was dead after such a horrific impact. At that moment, Joey regained some consciousness and Uncle John was able to gently pick his head up off of the hard pavement and cradle it in his lap. The rain continued to fall on anything in its path. The woman who was driving the car came up to them and placed her jacket over Joey to help keep him warm.

Within moments, the rain that was relentlessly coming down on Joey and Uncle John was not touching them. Mom, not just one or two people came out of their homes with umbrellas to shield a father and his son, but the whole block seemed to be in attendance. In fact, so many people came out that they formed an impenetrable wall to the weather using their umbrellas, their bodies and their love. All of this done silently without anyone saying a word.

You see people with all their differences, frailties and imperfections have a God given natural instinct to help one another. On that day, scary as it was, a perfect example of the wonderful creation God made was seen by all who were able to watch it unfold; and we all cried for joy in Heaven as we watched.

Love Always
