1. Budget

What is your budget? Do you plan to spend $200-$300 for an entry level guitar, or do not mind investing a bit more for one that will take you through as you improve on your guitar playing skills? Either way, ensure that you do not short change yourself by getting a poor sounding instrument as this will stunt your progress in learning the instrument.

If you are a novice, get the shop to tune the guitars properly before testing. You will then be able to make informed decision when testing and comparing instruments.

4. Test the instrument

When shopping for your guitar, always test it before purchasing. Note if there is a buzzing sound from the instrument. If there is, you will need to get the shop to fix it. Learn to pick up on the different tonal qualities of each instrument and go for the one you prefer.

Test a few guitars in different positions, whether standing or sitting. You should feel natural holding and strumming the instrument. The guitar should sit nicely in your hands and body.
