People are becoming more and more health- conscious these days and restaurants are catching on very quickly, resulting in them offering healthier options as well. So you should not have an excuse to eat badly while out at your favourite restaurant. This dine out guide will help you in the right direction.
Whether you eating at home or you out, the same rules for watching your weight apply. You need to eat more lean proteins, vegetables and whole grains and eat a variety of foods. Cut down on salt, sugar and alcohol. Drink plenty of water and include some exercise at least four times a week. Use this dine out guide often as healthy eating should be part of your lifestyle and not just part of a diet that you do for a specific period of time.
I have put together this dine out guide to help you make better food choices when you are out at a restaurant with friends or family.
- Plan what you going to have ahead of time, it helps if you know the menu. This saves you from making a
decision based on emotions, cravings and last minute choices. These usually results in high - calorie
choices.
- Drink at least 1 full glass of water before your meal, you will feel fuller sooner so you will find it easier not to
over-indulge.
- Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask for the kiddies portion, these are smaller portions and another bonus
is that they will be cheaper too.
- Order first. This will eliminate you from the discussion amongst your companions and you will not be
influenced by them. If you not sure how the dish is prepared then don't be afraid to ask, also if the dish
is fried then you can ask for the healthier grilled option.
- If everything on the menu is high in fat or calories, ask for the vegetarian menu, if they dont have one then ask
the chef to prepare a plate of fresh fruit and vegatables and a piece of grilled chicken, most restaurants
should be abe to prepare this with ease.
- Order a starter and a salad or soup and a salad as your main meal. Choose fresh fruit for dessert.
- When choosing soup, keep in mind that a cream based soup has more calories than a broth - based soup.
- If you order pasta, have a tomato sauce with it as a cream based sauce contains more calories, just like in
soup.
- Don't go out when you absolutely starving, this may result in overeating on the bread before your meal
- Choose steamed vegetables instead of baked potatoes or other starches.
- Eat your biggest meal at lunchtime, your body does not need the extra calories at night to fuel it. Feed your
body when it requires the energy, breakfast and lunch. That way you will cut down on lots of calories.
- Take time to enjoy your meal, don't rush through it, savour the flavours and textures of your food and enjoy
the company you with.
- Choose brown rice over white rice and forget about the french fries.
- Stay away from "all you can eat' buffets and salad bars. It's too easy to lose track of how much you eating.
- If you craving something sweet and you dont want fruit then choose sorbet. It contains alot less calories than
ice - cream
- If the portions are too large only eat half of eat and take the other half home.
- Take a walk after eating, stroll along a park or do some window shopping. You will burn calories and get your
exercise at the same time.
