Sanjay Kapoor was born on the 17th of October, 1965 in Mumbai, India. He is a Bollywood actor and producer. Son of film producer Surinder Kapoor, he is the younger brother of actor Anil Kapoor and producer Boney Kapoor and brother-in-law of actress Sridevi. His sister Reena is married to Sandeep Marwah of Marwah Studios. He began his career opposite Tabu in the film PREM. It was RAJA opposite Madhuri Dixit that brought him box office success .Though RAJA was a hero-centric and successful film yet Madhuri Dixit managed to steal the show completely and it did not bring much offers to Sanjay Kapoor. Critics and viewers called RAJA an out and out 'Madhuri Dixit film' and suggested RAJA should have been renamed RANI. Karisma Kapoor said in Manish Malhotra's show, "When people and critics would talk about Madhuri Dixit and RAJA in 1995, I used to think when such a thing would happen to me and then it happened to me in RAJA HINDUSTANI". He has also given critically-acclaimed performances as a villain playing the obsessive psychotic husband of Esha Deol in KOI MERE DIL SE POOCHHE which was a hit and he was playing a terrorist in the film QAYAMAT: CITY UNDER THREAT which was also a hit.

Sanjay Kapoor debuted the Bollywood film industry with the film PREM (1995). The cast of the film comprises of Sanjay Kapoor, Tabu, Deepak Tijori, Dalip Tahil, Aruna Irani, Saeed Jaffrey, Akash Khurana, Beena Banerjee, Raju Kher, Amrish Puri, Navneet Nishan, Govind Namdeo and Sunita Dhingra, The film is directed directed by Satish Kaushik. In this film, Sanjay plays the character of Sanjay Verma, who is an eligible young man but has been having hallucinations of a past life as Shantanu.
His next film RAJA (1995) stars Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Mukesh Khanna and Dalip Tahil. The film was Sanjay Kapoor's second film after his debut PREM with Tabu in Bollywood. PREM was a flop, but this film even though penned by critics to have lot of flaws did excellent business in Bollywood. Its success was mainly attributed to Madhuri Dixit because of her crazy fan followers, and this was the next release of her after HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN, which was the highest grosser of Bollywood ever from 1994 until 2001. People wanted to call this film RANI instead of RAJA. It was the fourth highest grosser of the year at the box office, and Madhuri Dixit was called the female Amitabh Bachchan of Bollywood in many magazines including India Today. It ran in Mumbai as well as in other big cities like Bangalore for more than 30 weeks in theaters. Madhuri Dixit received a Filmfare Best Actress Award nomination, and won the Star Screen Award Best Actress for the year. Sanjay Kapoor's character in this film was named Raja, who was the childhood lover of Madhu Garewal, played by Madhuri Dixit.
