subject: Enhance Your Home With Rain Chains [print this page]

Rain chains have been around for centuries and their origins trace back to Japan, so why are they just now becoming popular? Thats a good question! Do not know what a rain chain is? Basically, they are a decorative alternative to a downspout. They direct rain water from your gutter to the ground or a basin and are designed to create a beautiful and unique look for your home. Another attribute is that they add the calming sound of flowing water to your yard or patio and come in many shapes, sizes, and materials.

Types of Rain Chains

Double Loops: These are typically simpler in design and can come in standard or zinc plated steel which would not rust or pure copper.

Cups: These can come in all different sizes and are generally made with aluminum with the sides hammered in for a striking effect, iron or pure copper. They can be square, bell or sun shaped and feature gorgeous hand carved designs.

Animal Or Other Shapes: Rain chains can come in any shape you want. Some of the more popular ones are fancy koi fish, flowers, or fruits. Many companies will take specific requests to fit your rain chain design wants.

Over time, the look of your rain chain can change depending on the type of material it is made out of. For instance, pure copper will acquire a pretty patina coating overtime. Iron will eventually rust which can cause corrosion, and/or pitting. Certain steels will have a clean and polished look even after five years.
