What do you need? What do you want? Lose weight in 4 weeks? A loan up to XXXX? Free sex? Go Australia? Friendship? Meet love of your life? Anything can be at your disposal in a flash. Just click. We have been led into believing that anything we want can not only happen but happen the moment we wish. And although we pretend we do not really believe this magic wand world we behave as if we did. We prefer to hope that all these things might be realized rather than face the blank page that needs to be written down, fulfilled with our own effort and invention. We have been deprived of and soon will be devoid of the capacity to dream, yearn and wait.
A human being needs recognition. This is thought to be a primary need of ours. In order to be recognized we need other human beings. Only by the process of interaction with others do we stand a chance of knowing ourselves. However, before we do so we should know what we have to offer. Not always do we realize that what we want from others is as important for mutual recognition as what others want from us. We neglect this simple truth as a clich, obvious thing. But if we look closer, we are wrong. We no longer care for other people, we focus on ourselves or, to be more precise, on our imagined selves, the selves created by clicking. We do not know who we are and why we are because we prevent any opportunity to be one to one with ourselves. Me and Me is a prerequisite, sine qua non to start the journey inside and subsequently outside. Only then can we start interaction with others as offering beings, beings offering themselves to others.
Due to the just-click culture which is constantly offering instant changes to our lives we have become so impatient to reach, to grab, to have that the moment we have become disillusioned with one empty promise we immediately look around for another clicking magic. We do not draw conclusions from our experiences. We do not have time. Paradoxically, every little break between various activities is filled up with nonsense time-killing occupations. Mobile phone, iphone, mp3, how-are-yous,TV, window shopping, shopping proper, you name it. We cannot stand our own company. We are bored with ourselves. It feels awkward to be on your own, especially doing nothing. The reason is that we are not able to offer ourselves anything immediate. It is impossible to click a person.
A human being needs to transcend oneself in order to feel free. It means that you have to have a purpose, aim at something, crave to achieve, to reach higher than you are. The core, the very beginning of this process is something we can call a mystery, dream, longing, yearning, some indeterminate anxiety. These sensations can appear to us only in solitude, in a twilight hour when we look at trees swinging in the wind or in a quiet Sunday afternoon in the park with rustling leaves and some odd cry of a child. Semiconsciousness. Suspension. Awareness of our own self. Then the wish to go, to run, to fly and embrace the world is born, passion, hunger for life.
Dream is something unbelievable, almost impossible, something that cannot be fulfilled in a day or it stops being a dream. Dream makes us do things. For it to come true, we need effort. We concentrate. We struggle. We develop. We improve. We create. And we are more and more an offer to others because we carry with us our own world, unique in itself, ready to be shared.
Just-click people are frustrated and lost. In constant panic and fear. They do not know why but as they do not know any other solution or salvation than clicking so they click on: self-help, guidebooks, psychoanalysts, societies, doctors. Nothing can really help if you do not know who you are, why you hate your neighbour, which country you would like to visit, why you bought this or that. You do not know. You do not ask yourself such questions. You do not ask yourself any questions. You do not ask questions. You do not ask. And why? Because you are surrounded by ready answers. Just click.
How can we communicate, men and women, mothers and daughters, politicians and artists since we have become sacs full of scattered puzzles, desperately trying to connect different elements? We google and facebook one another and eventually pretend that the parts match.
Wake up in the morning and start another journey. You are waiting for yourself and you will happen. Just click on your heart.
