What is a photo montage? A photo montage takes a series of pictures and stitches them together to tell a story.
It may not happen often, but if you have a series of photos that capture an unusual event you should consider a photo montage to compress and communicate that occasion.
Here is an example that includes eight photos taken from a series of twelve.
It's easy to understand what the result of this series was, isn't it?
The photos were selected to clearly convey the story of the event. Obviously no single photo could tell the whole story, but by careful selection, cropping and then forming the results into a single composite image we are able to convey a complete story of the event.
In this case it is evident that both and rider and horse approached this river crossing with eager anticipation. It appears that the horse became aware of a problem before the rider (notice how the horse's ears are pointed forward in the 2nd photo). In the third and fourth photos the rider throws out his arm as he feels something is wrong. Then he brings his hands forward in an attempt to cushion his fall. The rest is pretty self evident as both horse and rider disappear into the water. The final picture shows the empty saddle. (Note: Neither horse or rider suffered significant damage, just a little sore.)
Certainly you can get the same story by laying out the 8 or 12 photos on a table, but the montage tells the whole story in a single image and perhaps with more 'punch'.
In this case we've designed the montage to be printed on an 11 oz mug. With text to record the participants, location and date it will serve as long lasting reminder of the event and will be an excellent gift.
The next time you find a series of images (they may be captured from a video as well as individual images) that tell a story, you should consider the advantages of creating a montage. Such an image could be reproduced on many surfaces such as a mug, plaque or even a tee shirt.
