How to Eliminate Constipation Part 2

In our first part of this article, we discussed the main cases for constipation and gave a single solution for you. In this article, we will give more helpful ideas related to curing constipation. Keeping an open mind will allow you to make necessary changes to eliminate the problem.

1. Exercise, Love it or Hate it

(Before you shut me down, yes, walking is exercise!) A healthy body is a body that is strong inside and out. The average person who is involved in regularly scheduled exercise program is far healthier than those who remain a sedentary lifestyle. This healthy body will natural combat attacks on the immune system far better than if the immune system of a sedentary person is attacked. Recent studies have shown those that lead sedentary lifestyles are more prone to constipation than those who are active. So, if you are physically able, go for a walk.

2. Laxatives

These are chemical compounds such as sorbitol, lactulose and polyethylene glycol that cannot be digested by your intestines. These go right to the colon and they way they work is by absorbing as much moisture from the colon as possible, thereby softening the stool. These have side effects and are only available by prescription. Some of the side effects include boating and gas. This happens because the chemicals attach themselves to bacteria in your digestive tract. See your prescribing physician about treatment if you go this route.

3. Water based Laxatives

These are laxatives that have ions that cannot be absorbed by the colon. Examples of such ions are phosphate, citrate which can be found in the following combinations: sodium phosphate, and magnesium hydroxide. They function by drawing water into the colon which in return softens that stool. One of the side effects is that they can cause kidney stones to those individuals who have weak kidneys. How do you know if you have "weak" kidneys? Usually, for this to take place you will have to take this type of laxative for long periods of time. Short term usage should be acceptable. Common water based laxatives are found in Milk of Magnesia and Epsom salts.

4. Stimulant Laxatives

These cause the small intestine and colon muscles to push the volume faster. They do this by increasing the water content in the small intestine or inhibiting the amount of water absorbed by the colon. These laxatives can be found in so called "home remedies" Castor oil, Senna and Aloe Vera oils. They are quite useful in alleviating and curing constipation but also have certain disadvantages such as diarrhea, intestinal cramping, and believe it or not, constipation. Talk about full circle!

So, due to the nature of the side effects, you should consult your physician before you jump into any type of chemical laxatives listed. There are many all natural products to be found on the internet that offer simple solutions to your constipation problem.
