HOW TO TRUNCATE EXCHANGE 2007SERVER LOGS running on WINDOWS SERVER 2008 using NTBACKUP METHOD

Backup is a versatile application that is included with WindowsServer and modified to support Exchange when we install the Exchange Management Console on a machine. Backup uses legacy streaming APIs to perform mailbox and public folder database backup and restore

If our Exchange Server is running on Windows server 2008, backup will not performed for Exchange files, it's for systems state file and as a result Exchange logs will not truncated after system backup.

We need to do some changes and modifications on our exciting Exchange Server to use the ntbackup tool.

Now we will do the backup process on Exchange Server and verify whether exchange logs of above storage group are truncated or not.

In order to install the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 Ntbackup program on our Windows Server 2008 computer we will need to following files from a Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 computer:

Ntbackup.exe

Ntmsapi.dll

Vssapi.dll

These can be found in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder of Windows XP/Windows Server 2003.

We need to Copy all 3 files to a folder in our Windows Server 2008 Program Files folder, for example we use C:Program FilesNtbackup.

Next, we will need to turn on or install the Removable Storage Management feature (we will get an NTSMAPI.dll error if Removable Storage Management is not enabled).

To turn on Removable Storage Management in Windows Server 2008 :

Open Server Manager, Add features and select Removal Storage Management.

Click next and finish the installation of Removal Storage Manager.

We copied esebcli2.dll from our Exchange 2003 server (C:Program FilesExchsrvrBin) to our Exchange 2007 sever (C:Program FilesNTBackup).

Then run regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlBackupRestoreDLLPaths

And changed the esebcli2 key from C:Program FilesMicrsoftExchange ServerBinesebcli2.dll to C:Program FilesNTBackupesebcli2.dll.

Now we are ready to run our ntbackup tool, so open command windows and run the ntbackup from path

When NTBackup starts, we will see an error regarding removable storage, but we just ignored this and clicked "Do not show this again"

Open Backup Wizard in Advanced Mode.

Click Next

We need to select " Backup up selected files, drives, or network data"

Select the storage group which contain Exchange database and logs file.

Browse the location where we want to place our backup file.

Click Advanced.

Select backup type as normal, because this will truncate logs automatically after backup.

Check Verify data after backup

Check Append this backup to the existing backups

Click Now.

Click Finish.

Once the Backup Complete, We need to click report to see weather our backup completed successfully or not.

Now we have to check whether the logs files are truncated or not. So we will go to our storage location and check and here all old exchanges logs are truncated automatically.

Hence using this method we are able to truncate exchange server 2007 logs running on Windows server 2008.
