No problem with installation
A quick note to counter all the negative reviews. I recently upgraded from QB 2007 and found the Amazon download process easy and the installation went without a hitch on two PCs. I agree that forcing you to call to activate the software is tiresome but actually I spoke to a sweet, understandable girl from India (who identified herself as Candy, presumably not her real name) who sold me a second license for $100 which was a nice bonus, as I had planned to buy the second license from Amazon as soon as I'd assured myself that the upgrade would go smoothly.
As for the software, at first glance you wonder what Intuit was doing between 2007-2010...certainly not investing much in upgrading the software, more like wondering how to insert revenue-generating ads for QB add-ons on just about every screen. There is a new dashboard-like screen that gives you snapshots of your company, which is useful although minimally configurable, and better Outlook integration, and ability to attach documents to customer files. But nothing worth upgrading for; I upgraded under duress, to continue use of online banking. But in the bigger picture $120 every three years is a small price for such mission-critical software that does the job very well.

Much ado about nothing....
Reading all the reviews about problems in downloading and activating, I was really worried whether my money on Quickbooks Pro 2010 would go down the drain. But I had little choice as my Quickbooks 2002 version doesn't work beyond windows XP, and I had to constantly boot up my netbook (running XP) to see what the accountants were doing. So I finally downloaded one copy, with my fingers crossed. It went through quite smoothly, on broadband connection. I then installed it and had it running on Vista 32 bit, in about an hour's time. I then converted my 2002 files, which went through without a hiccup. I then purchased two more licenses, as I need to use this on three computers, often simultaneously. I installed another copy on a computer running Windows XP. This also went through, after an initial glitch - I had to uninstall the 2002 version first. The software was activated on the internet, and there was no problem in the license numbers getting synchronized, even though I had purchased in two installments. I have now been using this for about four days, and am quite satisfied. Definitely a great improvement over 2002. Buying twice meant I had to spend an extra $7, but well, better safe than sorry.
Now for the flip side. I couldn't buy it for a very cost-effective $119 from Amazon, as Amazon ships / downloads this only to US customers. So I tried Intuit. But the Intuit store again had a problem - it wasn't shipping or downloading to India. The store page did not also offer a solution or a tip. Their Indian web-site does not list the software. There was a sale consultant (Madonna) hovering on the web-site, and she sent me a link for downloading in India. This worked fine, though I had to pay $159, an extra $40 which really hurt!
Navigating within Quickbooks can be a little frustrating - especially as they have now added a very large number of icons and items. The basic layout remains the same. However, it does not appear to be as Intuit-ive as 2002 did. Possibly, Quickbooks navigation has not moved with the times, though I find it quite sufficient for my needs, and far superior to the clunky and ubiquitous (and far more expensive) Tally or Ex, which seem to dominate Indian market. And since Microsoft has now bowed out of the race (Accounting Professional discontinued Nov'09), there hardly seems to be a choice.
In 2002, Intuit tried to nudge you to buying stuff from time to time, but it wasn't a nuisance. Now with increased e-commerce, Intuit has changed their strategy. You are cajoled, pushed, shoved, dragged all the time to buying extras from Intuit. It's a little like going to a restaurant, and having to pay separately for the table cloth, napkin, water, the lights, the music, (and possibly, one day, even for being allowed to go out). Quite annoying.
All in all, no troubles in downloading, installing or activating. Good to use - definitely over here in India. Can be better, though. One tip - shop around for a good price before you buy.

No Problem
I just want to say that I had no problem downloading, installing or activating this download of Quickbooks Pro 2010. I am running Windows XP and upgraded from Quickbooks Pro 2007. I was a little leary after reading the other reviews, but am glad that I didn't listen to them. It took 23 min to download, 6 min to install, 5 min to call and get the validation code. The operator verified information that he already had and didn't ask me for any additional information. He did speak broken English, but I had no problem understanding him, he was very pleasant. I haven't researched what the upgrades are in 2010 yet and I agree that I don't like them telling me that I have to upgrade if I want to continue to use payroll which I have to pay extra for the subscription, but to be honest, I had intended to upgrade anyway so it wasn't a big deal. I started out with the 1999 version of Quickbooks and have tried other software over the years, there is no comparison so all in all I am very happy with Quickbooks and will continue to use their software. I was just waiting for a decent price and Amazon came through.

Excellent download and installation
This evening I downloaded, installed and registered QB Pro 2010. The installation process converted my QB 2003 company file to the newest version. All of this took less than 30 minutes (via Comcast high speed internet). No problems whatsoever on a Windows 7 laptop. Overall, a great experience. As for my opinion of the new version of QB, the first impression is a favorable one.

Not a smooth install
I've been using QuickBooks since 1999, having owned QuickBooks 99, 01, 2003 and 2006. I'm by no means a QuickBooks expert, however. I reluctantly bought the 2010 version since my 2006 version is no longer supported and I was starting to have some issues. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on an Intel Core i7 920 machine with 6GB of DDR3 RAM.
The purchase process did not go smoothly. I wanted to use my business credit card for the purchase and added it, but Amazon still charged it to my personal card. That's more of a complaint with Amazon and not QuickBooks, however.
I wasn't able to download the product immediately. I received a message that the "process was taking longer than expected" with instructions that an email would be sent when the product was ready to be downloaded (about fifteen minutes later). The download itself went fairly smoothly. The 467 MB file only took a few minutes on my high-speed Comcast cable internet connection.
After downloading it, however, I ran into a problem with the installation. It stalled during the installation of MSXML 4.0. I made note of the suggestion by a previous reviewer to download a copy directly from Intuit (which I did), however I wanted THIS copy to work and was determined to make it do so. Since the problem appeared related to MSXML 4.0, I downloaded a copy directly from Microsoft. I let the MSXML 4.0 installation package remove what the QuickBooks package installed then installed a fresh copy of MSXML 4.0. I noticed that the UAC popped up a few times requesting permission to install at various times and I think this is what was causing the QuickBooks install package to stall since it didn't ask. Once the MSXML 4.0 installation was done, I reattempted the Amazon copy of the QuickBooks installation and finished successfully.
Since the problem appears to be permission-related, I would recommend right-clicking on the downloaded Amazon file and select "Run as administrator." That may solve the permissions problem. I may do a test install on my other Windows 7 computer and see if it goes smoothly. If so, I'll edit this review and update it with the results. Otherwise, Google "download MSXML 4.0" and you'll be able to download and install MSXML 4.0 (SP2) directly.
