Griffin Hospital was presented in the morning show Connecticut Style of WTHN. The host introduced Timothy Ehrlich MD, FACS and his patient of Lap-Band surgery, Rosie Navarro, and talked about the benefits of bariatric surgery.
One topic they discussed about was obesity as an epidemic, how the numbers have increased dramatically in recent years, a third of Americans being overweight today, and how metabolic surgery is a one misunderstood tool which tries to solve these issues. Dr. Timothy Ehrlich said that obesity has doubled over the last years in CT and it is a disease that affects adolescents too, this being the first generation of teenagers who will not survive their parents because of obesity and diabetes. In addition, the total percentaje of obese children -16% - is very close to addults' percentage of obesity.
Another issue discussed at the morning show was the difference between gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding. Although the gastric bypass is a procedure that makes people lose much more weight than the lap-band, the lap-band is adjustable and a reversible procedure which is not so invasive neither.
Rosie Navarro described how she lost 80 pounds and why she chose exactly bariatric surgery 6 years ago, when the amount of information about these tools was small. She also tell the viewers about the history of heart disease in her family and how she decided to change something in her life. She chose the LAP-BAND surgery because she thought the changes will come gradually, soshe would have time to adjust to a new lifestyle.
Another interesting fact was discussed in the morning show: success stories and how it is difficult to keep track of them, because success is something personal and subjective, and not necessarily tied to the pound lost.
