Loo cleaning dos and don'ts

Let's face it, cleaning your toilet is one of the least pleasant household chores, butone that'sabsolutely non-negotiable.After all, there's nothing quite so disgusting a grubby looking loo! Here's my list of dos and don'ts forgood loo cleaning habits.

Do wait until last thing at night or you have the house to yourself to clean. If you are planning to soak the bowl in toilet cleaner or limescale remover you can bet your bottom dollar that someone will want to use the loo as soon as you've filled it with Harpic!

Don't pour bleach directly onto the pan it can cause cracking on porcelain. Hairline cracks harbour germs and limescale leading to a build up of unsightly stains.

Do try putting some bleach in the cistern occasionally it flushes right through the loo to give an all round clean.

Don't use metal tools to scrape off limescale metal is harder than ceramic so it will scratch the bowl leading to a build up of hard to clean stains. I've read that you should try using a piece of brick instead it is harder than limescale but softer than porcelain so it will rub off limescale without scratching the loo bowl.

Don't worry if you've run out of toilet cleaner: two or three fizzy vitamin C tabs or denture cleaning tabs dropped into the bowl overnight will bring it up a treat. You can also scoop the water from the bowl and re-fill with coke or white vinegar and leave for an hour before flushing the acid in these liquids cleans the bowl brilliantly.

Lastly, do try and clean the loo most days a very quick wipe round daily should ensure you have no unsightly build up of stains and limescale.
