This film is much more than chase scenes and cool getaway tricks, the plot revolves around desperate father John Brennan, played by Russell Crowe, who is willing to do anything for his incarcerated wife Lara, played by Elizabeth Banks. The plot is really a new take on the jail-break genre. Audiences are forwarded three years ahead when John Brennan is in debt, struggling to raise his son and slowly losing his wife, skipping much of the investigation and appeals. This is when the movie gets really interesting. Crowe's character, a simple, intelligent man, blindly fumbles through possible solutions to get his wife out of jail. You assume that he'll do every stunt the film industry has concocted in the past and that we've seen before. Lucky for you, you'll be wrong. Just when you think you've figured it all out in this movie, you are thrown back into the dark wondering what Crowe will do next. Paul Haggis, director and screenplay writer, does a great job at making the audience wonder whether Lara Brennan really committed the crime. The best part, Crowe's character doesn't care.
Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks do an amazing job together, showing the true dynamic of a struggling, grieving couple. Crowe's character, does not have super human strength, tons of money or a massive amount of intelligence, he's a regular person like the audiences that will watch him this weekend. He doesn't have a criminal past or an evil twin brother, but he's smart, observant and can defy authority, which will make audiences grow to love him. You see great character development up until the very end. Most films have the characters completing impossible feats without any consequences, this film is much more realistic by depicting human error, understanding, and realization.
The Bad This isn't technically bad, it's just that we wanted more. That's what happens when you have a good product. If you're a big fan of Olivia Wilde, Liam Neeson and Brian Dennehy don't expect a whole lot of dialogue from their characters in the movie. All three of these actors have minor, although pivotal roles, and fulfill them well. As for the ugly, there isn't any.
Overall, it's a great weekend hit that will have you questioning every move, every turn until the very end. This movie is worth your cash, so take your date and enjoy it.
