Want to share your thoughts about the proposed changes to LEED? Perhaps offer suggestions about what works and what doesn't? You have until December 31, 2010 to speak your mind, at least in the first round of public comment.
The US Green Building Council (USGBC) has opened the public comment window for industry professionals and the general public to comment on proposed updates to the current system.
The USGBC seeks to improve the LEED standards and codes to meet current and future changes to innovation in the market since the standards were introduced a decade ago. As a result, the organization revises the standards often to reflect the continual changes in the market and available technology.
According to the statement issued by the USGBC, "LEED will not change overnight; we are embarking on a process of stakeholder engagement and careful
development of a consensus-based, technically improved, and innovative rating system that continues to push the market toward optimal building design, construction, and operations practices."
Proposals, which can be viewed on the USGBC website, were created by volunteers based on feedback from the market and shareholders. The proposals are designed to reflect market trends and continue to move the industry forward in terms of green building innovation, operation and construction.
The proposed changes will affect the Building Design and Construction area, including new construction, schools, retail, data centers and warehouses; interior design and construction for commercial interiors, retail and hospitality; building operations and maintenance for existing buildings, schools, retail and hospitality; homes and neighborhood development.
The 2nd Public Comment period will be open from July 1 through August 15, 2011. Though only two public comment periods are schedule, there may be more depending on necessity. The rating system ballot is set for release from August 1-31, 2012.
