Different Types of Carpet Underlay

Carpet underlay is a type of padding placed between a carpet and the floor to provide extra smoothness, texture and oomph to your beloved carpet. These are used beneath carpets to prevent damage from dust and pests, so it lasts longer without losing its original sheen!

It is advisable not to go in for carpets with built-in under lay because generally they are poor substitutes for good quality underlay. Before making your choice, you must take in to account your in-floor heating, if you have one. Also, never lay a good carpet over a worn underlay it will not look good and will not last long.

There are various types of underlay for carpets to choose from. Essentially, the choice of underlay depends on how you wish to use it whether in office or for domestic purpose. Domestic underlay is made of manufactured wastes in the furniture industry. They are also called rebound underpays or waffles, and are made of foam which is used in making couches and car seats. The foam is then cut into pieces and then molded together to form a sheet. They are very light and easy to handle. On the other hand, commercial underlay is especially created for commercial environments. They are much thicker and more resistant than the waffle kind. They are also referred to as crumb underlays and are made up of tyres that are cut into strips and pieces and made into underlays.

Another type of under lay to choose from is Felt underlay. This is made of wool and fine texture synthetic. However, it is no longer used these days as it is blocks dusts and can be the cause of dust allergies. It is mostly used in places where there is a requirement of sound insulation.

Rubber under lay is made of sponge rubber that provides strength, durability and support to your carpet. It has a unique cellular construction, which protects your carpet from becoming damp. It is due to this property that this type of underlay is the costliest option available.

The most common type of underlay for carpets is Foam under lay. It is made of recycled materials and is therefore, extremely environment friendly. The foam can range in price, with the expensive options providing better durability to your carpet, while cheaper ones may wear out sooner.
