Health Officials Shut Down A 7 Year Olds Lemonade Stand
[print this page]
Dateline, Portland, Oregon, which likes to consider itself a very
progressive place.
In a foreshadowing of just how heinous federal bureaucrats will
operate under Obamacare, officials from the Multnomah County Health
Department confirmed that they had indeed shut down 7 year old Julie
Murphy's makeshift lemonade stand last Thursday, at an art fair in
Northeast Portland.
They said that little Julie had violated a government regulation,
requiring a $120 temporary restaurant license to sell food to
the public.
Jessica Guernsey (funny that she would have a cow's name), the
Health Department Program Manager, had this to say when questioned:
"We are statutorially responsible for the public health, including
regulating food vendors. This was treated like any other vendor at
that particular event. The majority of people at this event do not
have a license."
So what! In the four decades that I have been involved in the health
business, I have never seen, or heard of anyone being harmed by a
lemonade stand. Or by someone's cookies.
The Cow went on to say that the fair can get "unruly," and isn't
equipped with proper facilities for food and drink sellers to
operate safely.
Here's more Cow wisdom: "It's a perfect storm of potential food
borne illness. You've got a lot of people, a lot of food being
produced, and there are not sufficient portable bathrooms, or food
sanitation stands."
What a crock of beeswax. This is all about revenue from licenses.
But bureaucrats like this will not be deterred and will continue to
cite regulations until Hell freezes over, under the guise of
"protecting" the public, just as Obama claims his healthcare will
"protect" the poor and the disenfranchised. (That's while Queen
Michelle needs 60 rooms in a five star hotel in Spain, at $2500 a
night, so she can unwind from all the hustle and bustle of life in
the celebrity lane. "Let them eat cake," indeed.)
Meanwhile, Barack is telling anyone stupid enough to listen that "He
knows it's tough out there," and "he and Michelle have had to make
some sacrifices." (Like what? They have another vacation lined up on
Martha's Vineyard, in a couple of weeks.) It's really hard work
"sympathizin' " with the downtrodden. And the Martha's Vineyard trip
will be the 8th vacation, this year. Do you know anybody who's had 8
vacations in, by the end of August? (I don't.)
Barack had Tim Geithner trotted out today, to tell us that because
of the new Obamacare law, Medicare will now be solvent until the
year 2027. Just how dumb do they think we are? The savings will be
achieved by screwing seniors out of care. AARP management apparently
hasn't figured this out yet, but I hope they take those yahoos' care
first. (I'm talking about the liberal suck-ups that run that
organization.)
The Portland bureaucrats are still talking about what a good thing
they did and how they weren't selective in their enforcement. A
friend of mine, with 35 years in the restaurant business, says he
never met a "clean" health inspector in the entire time he was in
business. "They always wanted something. Sometimes cash, sometimes
liquor, or food, or tickets to a big game. I got the same score on
my health inspections for 11 years in a row, when I suggested to
them they ought to change it up every now and then. While they were
"protecting the public," there were all kinds of real problems that
never got addressed. When one inspector got real greedy, we filmed
him and showed him the tape. We told him we were going to give it to
a TV station and we didn't see a health inspector for years."
I'm not saying every bureaucrat is a peckerhead, I just heed the
advice of an attorney I know very well, who rarely, if ever, lost a
case to the government, on any level. He said, "if those guys were
any good, they'd be in private practice."
Luckily, we can still purchase some of the things we need, without
interference from the nattering class. That would include my world
class formulas.
