Are My Workout Headphones Making Me Anti-Social?

Whenever I recommend people to carry workout headphones to the gym, this is what they usually ask me. I have a well-toned body (I am a fitness freak) and I tell them that I got my body because of my workout headphones. The gym should be a place where you focus on improving your health and body. In fact isn't that what you sign up for when you enroll in the first place?

One of the biggest distractions you will get at the gym is the other people at the gym. More often than not, you will end up with a talkative neighbor at the treadmill and you will end up slowing down your pace just because you are interested in what he or she has to say. What you have to understand is that you are there at the gym for yourself and not to socialize and flirt!

Whether you are a sports freak, a stay at home mom or somebody with a demanding career, getting your own space at home can be very difficult. I have a very demanding career and so I make it a point that I spend my time at the gym alone. I always tune in to my workout headphones and try to forget that there are people around me. The right music helps me keep calm and focus on my workout. This way I end up getting the right amount of exercise because I do allow myself to be distracted by flirty glances or talkative neighbors.

A lot of people who also swear by music while working out just depend on the music system that the gym provides. While this will work just fine for you, some routines will actually need slower tracks or sometimes you will just be better off with your own choice of tracks depending on your mood.

So, NO, I don't think it is anti social to carry your workout headphones. Getting motivated by the right music is essential to a successful and enjoyable workout.
