With Winter fast approaching, it is important to be thinking about your heating bill. The Energy Information Administration has reported that in the 2010 winter season the average heating fuel costs should be $928. Never fear, there are tips to that you can do to lower your heating bill.

First thing you should do is light a candle. You do this so that you can see if there is any air getting out via doors, light sockets, and windows. What you do is hold the candle near these things and see if the flame moves in the horizontal. If so, consider getting a barrier. For example if you notice there is air coming out of the bottom of your door, you can buy a snake, also known as draft stopper, which is about ten dollars per snake.

For windows, grab a cover. You can get these for about ten to twenty dollars per window. A smart thing to do is to leave the cover on at night. This way you can keep the cold air out and keep your house cozy at night. During the day, it is a good idea to take the covers off. This way the light rays can heat up the house.

Another good tool to have to keep your heating bills in check is a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to program your settings to have a lower temperature when you leave and an increased temperature when you are home.

Another helpful tip is to watch your water heater. For example, you may not notice a change from your water heater going down to 115 from 130, but you will notice it in your bill.

One thing, that is really easy is to do is check your heating unit. Make sure that there is nothing on or leaning or draped over the heat pump. A good idea is to clean it via your water hose so that it is clear of dirt, grime, leaves and twigs. This way you can ensure that your heater will be in proper working order for the winter to come.
