Reverse osmosis filtering systems are able to purify water so that it is nearly perfect. However, there are problems with pure water of which many people are unaware. An example of this is that water which is treated through reverse osmosis, while clean, is also free of the nutrients and minerals we all need. Ironically, reverse osmosis purified water is too pure.
More problems with pure water include reverse osmosis treatments not removing chlorine from the water system. Chlorine is one of the reasons we get filter treatment in the first place. While chlorine will kill most bacteria in water, it will also lead to digestive problems in humans if too much is ingested.
Reverse osmosis causes more problems with pure water than it fixes. Cyst spores are extremely small and can't be seen with the human eye. They're about the size of a tip of a pin. Most methods of disinfecting do not reach these tiny cyst spores, so they can only be eliminated with sub-micron sized particle filter. These spores are unhealthy and if one were to drink them, they can have stomach and intestinal issues. Reverse osmosis systems, when they function properly, can stop cysts but the membranes that are in the system can become faulty and one may never notice. Manufacturers of reverse osmosis units do not have a regular schedule for maintenance so you never know if you are really being protected.
As an alternative, you can find a carbon and multi-resin block that can include a sub-micron sized membrane to take care of the cysts. These filtration systems are usually good for six months or 500 gallons, whichever comes first. Carbon filtration systems are certified to reduce cysts by 99%. Replacements for these filters are quite inexpensive and can be found either on the internet or at hardware stores. They are also easily replaceable.
