Veliko Tarnovo is a city in north Bulgaria, which is also a centre of the municipality Veliko Tarnovo. Till 1965 the name of the city is Tarnovo which is more commonly used by locals today.

Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most ancient cities in Bulgaria. It has more than 5 thousand-year old history and the first signs of life are dating from the third millennium before Christ. The ancient part of Veliko Tarnovo the kings castle, which is dating from the time when the city was still a capital of Bulgaria, is situated on three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora. According to many contemporaries, during the middle ages Tarnovo has been the New Jerusalem, Rome and Constantinople taken together.

Tsarevets and Momina Krepost are situated in the city of Veliko Tarnovo. A legend is telling that at the Roman Times there were Roman fortresses which were protecting the road to gorgeous Nikopolis. When the barbarians rushed, they raised the siege and destroyed the great city. Then the Romans settled in the fortresses. Under them there were huge vaults connected with tunnels. In the galleries the Romans kept the treasures of Nikopolis. Romans kept stabilizing the fortresses. When they had to step back, they created deadly mechanisms in the galleries and smeared them with poison. They also disguised the secret entries. The entrance of the dungeon under Tsarevets was situated in the South part. By this gallery a man could reach an underground lake. But only a Roman who knew the secret of the treasure could proceed searching for it. A hidden mechanism was draining all the water and there were stairs which were leading to other gallery. Going down there were many other levels. On every level the Romans were keeping one treasure. But these galleries were very risky and dangerous. So that if someone unenlightened enters the dungeon he/she would never come back alive. In every hall there were precious stones golden or silver, ornamented with other precious stones. Many golden coins were piled up. The dungeon under Momina Krepost was on two levels. The treasure was down there. The entrance was a huge draw-well and on its bottom one could see water. Big stony stairs were leading down there where the gallery is.

There are also many other legends about this citys history and many legends about its past. You should go on a bus tour there because it is amazing. Dont forget to go on a tour around Veliko Tarnovo through the many and picturesque villages that surround it. You dont have to wait till spring to go on your bus tour. Do it now!
