In the 9th century, there was Kose Kanaoka who paints landscapes and portraits by using the methods and styles of Chinese Tang Dynasty. A sculptor, Jocho lived around 1057A.D. is a Busshi. Busshi is a sculptor specialising in producing Buddha statues. Jocho use technique of carving one figure from a few pieces of wood. Many of them came from the Kei School. Among them are Kaikei, who lived in the mid 12th century, Jokei in the late 12th century and Unkei from 1151 to 1223. In ink and wash painting (also called Sumi-e), the artists are Josetsu who lives from 1405 to 1423, Shingei from 1431 to 1485 and Yosa Buson from 1716 to 1784. Another person Tomioko Tessai was a painter and calligrapher from Kyoto School from 1836 to 1924. There are also famous Japanese artists focused in Ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e means pictures of the floating world and make up the genre of woodblock prints. Among the painters is Hishikawa Moronobu who lived from 1618 to 1694. He is considered the father and creator of Uniyo-e.
Apart from these names, there are more famous Japanese artists who come out with modern art. Koun Takamura (1851 to 1934) is a sculptor of Ueno Park statue. Kuroda Seiki lives from 1866 to 1924, introduced impressionism painting to Japan. Tsuguharu Foujita (1886 to 1968) was a painter who applied Fench oil painting to Japanese painting. Tezuka Osamu who lives from 1928 to 1989 was a famous manga artist who worked on Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion.
These Japanese artist and many unmentioned ones have certainly contribute much to the world of arts.
