subject: Diaper Bags: The New Style Accessory [print this page]

It was only in the 20th century that the modern disposable diaper was invented, and introduced to Americans by Johnson and Johnson in 1949. Over the next few decades, as the number of babies continued to grow, so did diaper companies. Procter & Gamble and Kimberly Clark are two of the most famous ones, with their brands Pampers and Huggies respectively. Several adjustments continue to be made to the original diaper think flexi-guards and leak protectors and today, almost every family with infants in the United States will be using some kind of diaper.

There is the ever-present argument about the actual benefit of a disposable diaper. Most children will go through several thousands of them in a lifetime creating waste by the tonnage and leading to even larger landfills. Enter the reusable diaper. These diapers are made from cloth or bamboo and can be washed and reused multiple times. Yet, ever since man (or woman) discovered the diaper, they have discovered an even more important challenge that of creating a suitable diaper bag in which to carry them in.

Diaper bags were ideally made from heavy duty washable plastic and had several compartments in them to hold diapers, disposable wrappers in which to wrap soiled diapers, wet wipes or other cleaning agents, washcloths, hand sanitizers, baby creams and diaper creams. They also came with a plastic folding sheet on which to lay the baby on. But these traditional models were bulky and cumbersome, and frankly, ugly to look at.

The modern day diaper bag is very different from their earlier models and in fact more and more women are realizing that just about any sturdy bag can be substituted for a diaper bag. This versatility means you can use your bag for a variety of activities, especially once the baby has outgrown diapers.

One such versatile bag is the ZipIt Le Gym which is stylish fun bag to carry, and large enough to fit in all you need to change a baby. Instead of a cold and hard plastic mat, fill it with a soft washable baby blanket and keep a plastic zipper bag to secure creams and lotions in. The bag is washable which means any messes are easily cleaned up. And once babys out of a diaper, it makes a perfect gym bag to help you get back into shape.

Another fun bag which is great for the working parent is the ZipIt Binder Bag. While its essentially made for the student or young executive, its many pockets and thick strap make it an ideal diaper carrying bag. And once it has outgrown its use as a diaper bag, use it to hold your books and study material as it was intended for. And for dads, the ZipIt Messenger Bag will score him double brownie points- for being cool and trendy as well as carrying diapers.

When looking to select a bag to carry diapers in, consider the following:

Washable material

Smoothly functioning zips or buckles to keep contents from falling out

Compartments or enough room to hold a plastic mat, blanket and baby cleaning essentials

Classic styles which dont date

Multipurpose functionality, so you can use the bag even after youve used the last diaper.
