Psychologists define self-esteem as a person's assessment of his/her own value. In other words it is what you think of yourself as an individual. If you have a high self-esteem it means you feel good about yourself and if not, the contrary. Self-esteem includes your attitudes as well as emotions.

The impact of low self-esteem

It is an imperfect self-image that leads to poor sense of self worth. This is derived from other extrinsic factors such as employment, inter-personal relations and social order, among other things. The problem with low self-respect is that it leads on to highly pessimistic thinking of oneself which makes a person believe all the bad opinions that others might hold about you. As a result of this, one's confidence also takes a beating. Without adequate confidence, you cannot behave or communicate within society in a successful manner. In the face of obstacles then, one cannot hold strong. To avoid all these complications, it is important to know how to build self-esteem.

Techniques for improving your self-esteem

There are various techniques to build upon your self-esteem and you can rely on any of the methods. However this is not an exhaustive list, so you can even try something else that works to build your confidence.

1. Assert yourself. This means having the ability to clearly state your opinions and what you want. However, this is often misunderstood as being harsh, or impolite although that is not the truth. What it simply entails is how important you feel your needs are and the ability to hold your own against others' views.

2. Appreciate yourself for your efforts. Even if you feel a slight improvement in your confidence, give yourself a little pat on the back. The self- appreciation is essential to maintain your tempo and motivation level leading you onto your goal.

3. Take charge and be responsible. Always remember that you are one a kind, so do not attempt to be like anyone else. Just be in control of where you are headed in life and take responsibility for what happens in your life due to your own decisions. This is better that being led by someone just to steer away from disappointments.

The question of how to build self esteem has been dwelt on since time immemorial. The path is a slow one, so it is vital that you never lose focus. Most importantly, remember that you can only succeed in being self-confident when you no longer fear failure.
