Sony Says No to Linux on PS3

In the past consumers were attracted to Sony's PS3 because they could install Linux on it. They could simply get the program and install it via a USB cable or by inserting a disc with the program on it. Many people purchased the unit specifically for this purpose because it gave them a well respected operating system on a well respected gaming console. What was not to love?

As of March 2010 Sony says Linux is not to love. The company released a firmware update that made it impossible to put Linux on PS3. This firmware that was released was not a mandatory change, but those who did not download it paid the price as they were not able to use features supported by Sony, such as using the PlayStation Network. This limited the game play of millions of customers from around the world who purchased the PS3 because of the Linux offering.

Sony has said that consumers are no longer able to put Linux on PS3 because of security precautions. The paperwork associated with the lawsuit also states that piracy is an issue and that is why the firmware needs to be downloaded. Those who choose not to download the firmware will still be able to use the system, they will just find that some features are blocked. In fact, you won't even be able to get on the Play Station Network. This is a serious concern for consumers who purchased the PS3 for this feature as they now have limited abilities and feel as though the features they paid for are being taken away from them.

Of course for those who wish to install linux on ps3 there is always PS3 Magic.
