subject: The Vw Transporter Hits 60 [print this page]

Volkswagen have been producing and selling the Volkswagen Transporter since 1950, making it 60 years old this year. The current model has been around since 2003, so is starting to look a little tired so it has had a facelift for 2010.

The Transporter is a very popular van, since 2003 over one million units have been sold worldwide, a total of ten million units have been sold in the 60 years of its production. Volkswagen has recently unveiled its new Transporter range of vans, kombi chassis cabs and window vans. The new transporter range has a much more refined exterior design, advanced comfort levels and high levels of safety features.

The Transporter comes with a choice of 2 common rail TDI engines which VW say will be cheaper to run and maintain, they claim it has improved economy by an average of 10% across the range. The two 2.0 litre diesel engines come with either 138bhp or 178bhp, both come with either a 6 speed manual gearbox or a 7 speed DSG automatic.

Subtle changes have been made on the inside, the new transporter comes with a new three spoke steering wheel, new modern instrument cluster, the latest RNS audio and VW Navigation built in. More luxurious options are available as optional extras; along with the DSG gearbox new buyers can choose lane change assist; reversing camera; and tyre pressure monitoring.

As standard the Transporter comes with driver aids such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with hill start assist and an emergency braking system, which automatically puts on the hazard warning lights.

The pre 2009 facelift model is still available; there are great deals to be had for a used Volkswagen Transporter in Barnstaple.
