subject: Common Orchid Problems [print this page]

Although growing an orchid is not a very complicated process and can be learned easily, it does not necessarily mean that orchids are safe from developing problems. Orchid problems come along with growing orchids. Roots are the most common part of your orchid that would show signs that something is wrong with your plant.

Your orchids will definitely experience having problems for a certain point in their life. Sometimes avoiding these problems is just very impossible. The good thing is orchids are not innate to most environments that we place them in; therefore they are also not susceptible to a lot of common problems that might occur with your other garden plants. The most common orchid problems are listed below:

Orchid pests infestation

The most common orchid pests include slugweevels, mealybug, and greenfly. The good thing is, orchids are usually grown indoors, so more often than not they will not be bothered by the usual garden pests.

The good news is that standard pesticides can remove majority of these pests. However if your orchid has pest problems it is always better to ask for professional advice with regards to the most appropriate pesticide that you should use. Sometimes certain pesticides can harm your plant. After all you wouldn't certainly want to add more orchid problems by removing old ones, right?

Orchid Diseases

Diseases are far more common cause of any orchid problems. This in fact can be a whole topic in itself. Orchids can fall foul because of leaf rot, mildew, botrytis and a lot of other pathogens. The best way to fight these sorts of problem is to make certain that your orchids has sufficient free flowing air around during the night. Again, if you are uncertain of the most appropriate measure to take, go to your local professional florist or expert as soon as possible and have them take a look at your orchid.

Orchid Viruses

Among any other problems involving your orchids, orchid viruses can be the nastiest. The good news is that, orchid viruses are actually very rare. The most common virus that can attack your orchid is the CymMV and ORSV. Virus infestation among orchids will manifest themselves in the leaves of your plant. These two viruses which commonly affect the orchids are very stable and lose their pathogenic characteristics very slowly. As a matter of fact, it can stay infectious for weeks or even longer under the right environment. Generally, sap from an infected plant that has dried in your tools, pots or benching can be an excellent source of this infection.

Treatment

Treating your infested orchid is very possible. You can actually treat these orchid problems by yourself but I would still suggest that you seek a professional advice if you are really concerned with your plant.
