subject: Why Books Make Such Good Presents [print this page]

Christmas is always the time of year when everyone goes into a frenzy of gift shopping or their near and dear ones. If you are still having trouble figuring out what to get for people close to you and you are on a budget, consider giving gifts of books. With books, you can never go wrong and your bank balance won't be too affected.

One reason why books make such good presents is that there is always a book for every genre you can imagine. There is always a book available for every type of person you know. There are story books for kids and even picture books for toddlers. There are millions of fiction books that can entertain the most avid horror fan, action books for the action junkie and even books that can make grown men cry. If you know someone who loves watching movies, you can give that person the book on which the movie was based (most movies these days are based on books). There are even books that you can purchase as a set for a discount.

Another reason why books make such great presents is that they are so easy to buy and are affordable. You can visit your neighborhood bookstore or simply go online. And, a bonus is, there are less crowds in bookstores than in the normal gift shop or mall during the holidays. You can browse through books to your heart's content until you find what you are looking for without being shoved aside by crowds.

Another thing is that books are easy to send to friends far away. There is very little chance of breakage during transit and they are never bulky. Buying books online also makes delivery easier because you can give the delivery address of the receiver and even request that it be giftwrapped all within the comforts of your home.

The most important benefit of giving books as gifts is that you are encouraging the receiver to read. In this modern world where everything is electronic and digital, most people have forgotten the wonders of reading a good book. There are already a growing number of people who have even forgotten how to spell properly because of the constant use of text messaging where words are clipped and spelled crudely. There is nothing more important than igniting the desire to read again. If the person you would like to give a book too is too much of a tech junkie, give an e-book.

There are millions of books in print that are also available in e-book format.

Children always appreciate good books. There are millions of storybooks that have colorful illustrations that can entertain children non-stop for years. There are even books that have those little gadgets in them that help children read and write. Some make music when kids pick the right answers from puzzles or questions inside the book.

Adults also appreciate good books. If your friend likes carpentry, there are thousands of books that will help that person make new designs for stuff he can make himself. A mother-to-be will love you no-end if you give her a book meant for pregnant women or books that will help her care for her baby once it is born.

Senior people will always love a book of their favorite classics. And, for those with eyesight issues, there are books that are printed in large print and can be read easily. You can even give them those nifty e-book readers loaded with their favorite books. E-book readers are convenient and the elderly can change the sizes of the texts when they are reading. There are even audio-books available for people who want to hear the books they love. These are also great for people who may have serious eyesight issues or are unable to see.
