There is equal importance of the dog safety as dog training. And the health of the dog also depends on the safety measure implemented. To look after your Westie dog inside the house, it is recommended to use baby gates. But still, baby gates aren't so valuable lifesavers to prevent your dog from escaping through the opened door.

As for the Westie training, people try different tips for the successful training. So, for safety also there are few things to be taken in consideration. The ground-level cabinets should be equipped with children proof latches, all the medication and cleaning products should be stored at the safe place; electrical wires, hot irons, coffee jar, space heaters, plastic bags should be placed at the right place without reach of the children. The toxic plants should be removed from the home.

You have to check the dog's toy periodically to ensure any broken pieces that won't be caught in their throats. For the Westie's strong jaw, plastic and vinyl toys are not suitable. It is also recommended not to give them pelt chew toys, pig ears or hooves, as the swallowed pieces of these toys can cause respiring or intestinal problems.

Summer Safety

It is important to keep your Westie cool, secure and cozy during summer season. The dog training experts recommend not taking your dog out in a car, if the trips involve stopping at locations where you cannot take your pets. This is because the temperature in the car can reach up to 120 degree Fahrenheit in just a minute which is not suitable for the dogs. If you see any animals showing sign of heat anxiety, call the animal care and control center immediately.

Avoid the heavy workout during extreme hot climate. Avoid physical exercise when heat is intense and the hot tar of the floor can burn the feet of your dog. Westie training should be done inside the house during the hot day in the cool, well ventilated room. And be sure that the dogs can approach to fresh and clean water.

If you are taking your dog to the beach, make available him with a shaded place and enough water to drink. If the dog has been in salt water, you have to rinse them off. Never let your dog to the firework displays. Even the calmest pets can be frightened with the crowds, earsplitting noises and blazing lights.

For the proper health of your Westie during the westie training sessions, you have to consult with the veterinarian about the flea and its prevention. It is suggested not to use any combination of worm-flea medicines for Westie. Your dog should be examined regularly for the preventions.

You have to take your dog to the veterinarian if they show any kind of following symptoms:

1. Shaking heads and pawing at ears 2. Eye rubbing or squinting 3. Licking and biting rectum and other parts of body or rubbing head on the ground 4. Violent sneezing with blood discharge from nose 5. Whining and yelping without reason 6. Raised contaminated spot with inflammation
