Let me explain why. When you are doing your shopping online at whatever website you are at and it comes time to 'check out', what is the one thing that is required of you to have?
An account with that company.
Well, how do you create that account? Typically it's done by providing your email address and your name.
What is that company doing?
Building a database of email addresses to send promotional material to once you are done with the buying process. Don't think that's the case?
When was the last time that you purchased something online through whoever? Not too long after you completed the buying process you received an email confirming your purchase, right? And that email probably contained the shipping information for that purchase.
What happened in the next few days? You received more promotional material from them on an upcoming 'sale'.
Maybe the products that they have 'on sale' are closely related to the product you just purchased. Coincidence? Probably not. That company is using the database of information from your purchase and marketing directly to your previous purchase.
Ingenious, huh?
You can do the same thing with your business and you should be.
Once you have a subscriber opted in to your list, you should start creating a relationship with them by providing them with relevant content to what they opted in for. You need to do this for very specific reasons, number one of which is your bottom line.
Once you have provided them with content that is going to help them build their business, or educate them more on a specific topic, you can start presenting them with marketing emails. All along you are giving them information about yourself, how you have grown your business and have proven to them that you are one of the respected experts in that particular subject, they will start to click links and go to your sales letters.
So back to my original question; Why List Building? Why Now, More Than Ever?
Because without a list of very targeted subscribers to provide content and marketing messages to, the survival of your online business will be very short lived.
