Contemporary Kitchens - Info

The kitchen is the heart of any home; fellowship, good times, and love all often revolve around food and the act of eating. Which is why, in contemporary life, it is a natural desire to want a kitchen equipped with all the gadgets and toys that create a stylish look for the home, while also maintaining functionality. A modern kitchen is not complete without certain features, and the lack thereof will also make the room seem empty. Some of these are necessities to the function of a kitchen while others simply add a charm and a facility to contemporary kitchens that makes them slightly more desirous than just being "optional."

The Necessities

The first things one should consider when designing a kitchen are the four basics: the cabinets, the refrigerator, the stove/oven, and the sink. Contemporary kitchens tend towards the sleek look, using stainless steel appliances whenever possible and kitchen cabinets in very basic black or white colors. Ideally, the refrigerator should be a side by side model, and the cabinetry built around it, so that it fits snugly. If this is not possible as a result of budgeting, then a simple kitchen cabinet refacing should at least be considered so that the decor of the room gels. Household cooks are beginning to discover the advantages of the gas stove and oven to that of the electric equivalent, and if possible natural gas should be considered if it is available in your area. When choosing a sink, modern design dictates again to shoot for either black, white, or stainless steel; the sink should absolutely have more than one side.

The More-than-Optionals

While not necessary in the absolute sense, contemporary kitchens will seem dull or uninspired without the addition of several key pieces that really pull the look of the room together. An island in the kitchen should be one of the first considerations when redesigning the feel of the room; they provide valuable work and counter space, and can double as a bar when company is over. Above this could be hung a pot rack. Not only are they stylish and help to fill out the space of the room, but they also provide an incredible functionality in that you no longer have to dig around for the correct sized cookware; additionally, they provide the benefit of freeing up more cabinet space for storage. Further things to spruce up the room would be built in spice racks, knife racks, built in cutting boards, etc.

Decorating

What you will be left with is a room that is essentially black and white, with stainless steel accents. These colors of course are the basics, and thus allow you to add further accent colors of your choice. Black goes with anything, as does white, meaning you can throw in purple here and there or red as your taste dictates. When you are finished the result should be a polished, functional look that will impress while simultaneously be inviting. After all, the heart of the home should have people in and be a lively place.
