The idea is that customers would benefit from cheaper flights due to the amount of money that the airline raises from the charges. But it's unlikely that any profits in this matter will be passed on to the customers. What it a much more likely scenario is that it will simply be another profit making tool. Customers may ignore it on flights that are less than an hour or maybe two, but ultimately it will put customers off. It would certainly stop me from ever flying with an airline that engaged in this practice.

It simply won't work, and is unlikely to come across the pond to the United States anytime soon. So don't expect flights from Pittsburgh to West Palm Beach to require that customers pay. But don't rule it out either. By phoning to ask you airline to see if they plan to begin charging for this or anything similar you can add your dissenting voice to say that this is one step too far, and that it will not be tolerated.
