Permanent Change Is Gradual

It was a high school physics teacher who taught methis valuable lesson about sparks and gasoline. Hepointed out that since gasoline contains no oxygen, aflame cannot burn without the right amount of air. Hewould put one drop of gasoline in a Coke bottle, and holda lit match to the top of the bottle. Nothing. Not until thebottle contained three drops of gas would a blue flameshoot from the top. Nor would four or five drops do thetrick. Just the right amount of air and the right amount ofgas . . . with a spark . . . produce the right amount offlame.

Changing roles is just as gradual. Just like changing agolf or tennis swing, it takes a great deal of practice toprogram the brain. Changing roles takes risking a newrole time and time again until it begins to become familiar.

An old vaudeville joke makes the point. A gentlemanin a hurry asks a New York cab driver to pull over to thecurb where he inquires through the window, to a policeman on the corner, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"The policeman replies, "Practice, practice, practice!"

It was the French philosopher and scientist Pascal who wrote one of the most interesting things I've readabout God. Pascal hedged his bet by saying that notbelieving in God had no consequences if there were noGod. But if there were a God, he continued to reason, then everything would be in favor of being a believer. Andit is belief in God that makes the change in behaviornecessary.

Pascal said that at the point of confessing to believein God, the new believer must actas if there is a God. Onemust prayas //prayer will be answered, kneelas //'one is humble, and in doing so, obtain faith.

Permanent change is accomplished in just such tinysteps. Each day, each hour, each moment, must be livedas if the responsible change is possible, and in that moment, change occurs!
