subject: Guided Meditations Featuring The Third Eye Meditation [print this page]

There are several different types of guided meditations. This article is going to focus on the specific guided meditation called the third eye meditation. The third eye meditation is an excellent way to open the third eye chakra also called the head chakra and ajna chakra. This guided meditation will help develop several different faculties in a person. These include self master, wisdom, ESP, intuition, imagination, ability to accurately read others and concentration.

There are some basic things that will help with this guided meditation. You will need some way to time the guided meditation, a comfortable quiet location and you should not be overly full or hungry.

In this guided meditation like all meditations you should not strain or try to force it in any way. The first thing you want to do is sit in a comfortable cross legged position on the floor with your spine straight, but not rigid. You may also sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Next you want to take 5 complete breaths, breathing in through the nose and completely filling up the lower half of the lungs, working up to the upper half of the lungs. When filling the lower half of the lungs the stomach should move out. hold this breath for a count of 5. Next exhale the air, first the top of the lungs then the bottom of the lungs. push all the air out till there is no more in your lungs. repeat this 5 times.

The next step in third eye meditation is to lay your hands one on top of the other in front of you. This allows the energy generated from meditation to flow freely through out the body. You then close your eyes and direct your attention to a point between your eyebrows and slightly higher. You will be able to feel when you are focusing on the correct spot. Next begin to say silently to your yourself om, which is pronounced aum. Say this slowly in a long drawn out manner. Repeat this slowly to yourself over and over for a period of 20 minutes. Your mind will wonder and you will get itches, twitches and all kinds of things that want to distract you. Maintain the mantra and when your mind drifts off, just bring it back to the mantra. Do not get upset about the mind drifting off to other thoughts, this is normal and expected.

As a beginner with the third eye meditation it sometimes helps to imagine the sound vibrations of the mantra coming from the third eye. Do not try and time the mantra with the breaths, but if it naturally happens that is fine. It is best to forget about the breath and just concentrate on the mantra. At some point in your third eye meditation practice you will start to loose the mantra without any other thoughts, while still maintaining your awareness. This is a good thing and what you should be working towards. Typically when this happens the head will drop as your mind becomes completely silent.

Do not worry if you think you did not go very deep in certain daily guided meditation. Studies have shown that sometimes when we think we where in a very deep meditation we actually where not and vise versa. It is best to have no expectation and then the results will come.

When the 20 minutes of third eye meditation have come to an end, slowly open your eyes and sit for a couple minutes. Let your energies adjust and get comfortable with your surrounding environment again.
