subject: Driver Update Software Vs Manual Driver Updates [print this page]

Outdated drivers is one of the leading causes of computer problems so when it comes to driver updates, you want to make sure you are doing it right and are correctly installing the right software. You can either update drivers manually or with driver update software. We now will take a look at both methods in an effort to shed light on the safest, easiest and most efficient method.

In order to update your drivers manually, first determine what piece of hardware is not working. This is easy and you will notice that your printer, USB or wireless is not being identified. Next, try uninstalling and reinstalling the hardware. If that doesn't solve the problem, check the version on the manufacturer's website to the one you own. If they are not the same then you will need to update the driver. If they are the same, then you have a problem with your computer and will need to explore that in further detail with a computer expert.

Next go to My Computer, go to System Properties, go to Hardware Tab and click on Device Manager. Look for the icon that the piece of hardware you trying to fix corresponds to and beside it notice a red x, question mark or exclamation mark. A question mark means the driver is not installed. Run the disk installer or download the driver from the manufacturer's website. A red x means you need to enable the hardware device driver. Click on the icon, select Properties and click on Enable Device. An exclamation mark means you need to update the driver. Right click on it and click Update Driver, or run the installer disk or download the driver from the manufacturer's website. All that work for one driver update!

Driver update software is a little more simple and all your drivers can be pretty much update in three clicks. First download the software and install it onto your computer. Next, run a driver scan and let the driver update software automatically identify all the drivers urgently required on your computer. Following this click download and once complete, click install drivers and you are finished. All your drivers are updated in three click: scan, download and install!

Therefore, for most people, driver update software is the safest, easiest and most efficient way to update all your drivers.
