subject: Obama Grants For Mothers: The Key To The Future [print this page]

For many people, a bright future starts with good education. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. Many important people are focused on increasing scholarship opportunities and improving education.

For decades, college prices have steadily increased. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Low-income students suffer the most if they are unable to secure enough scholarship or grant money. Working, single mothers are particularly hit hard. Not only does educating mothers help provide for their families, but it also improves the workforce. Creating college grants for moms is one way the President is dealing with this issue. Federal Pell Grants have now been fondly called Obama grants. To help with university costs, a student can earn more than $5,000. Before Pell grants maxed out at about $4,000. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money.

Another worthwhile program is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Under this incentive program, education costs up to $4,000 are cleared. Especially for less expensive schools, $4,000 could be a significant help for a student. Both of these tax programs help single moms tremendously because they are traditionally low-income individuals. There are plenty of options on where, when and what a student can study. With more incentives, more ambitious adults will realize their goal to get a college degree.

The President has demonstrated that he considers this issue a priority. With some changes to the lending system, many graduate and undergraduate loans will be less costly. Preparing schools and students for success is an important Obama administration mission. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. At a community college students can gain important knowledge as well as save money.

In his 2007 Reclaiming the American Dream speech, Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
