subject: Discover Model Railroad Basics -- What You Need To Start [print this page] Learning how to set up a model train can be a blast, but along the way you'll want to make sure you end up buying the right equipment from the start.
Model railroading like many hobbies has a wide variety of equipment available for purchase.
As with most products we purchase on a daily basis, quality and price go hand and hand. The model railroad hobby is much the same.
So to help get off on the right foot, decide right away what you are trying to accomplish with your model train set.
Is this going to be for your child?
You might not know yet, whether or not your child will develop a big interest in this hobby. So therefore you may not want to spend a lot of money before knowing what their interest level will be.
Are you a serious model railroader?
If so you won't want to purchase a toy train set. For the serious hobbyist buying the right equipment is critical to the operation, and overall appearance of your set.
Whichever scenario holds true for you, you can now head to your local hobby store with a much better idea of what equipment to purchase. Either way it is wise to have a total budget in mind prior to going.
When buying for the first time, stick with freight cars, and locomotives that are shorter in length. Due to most tracks having 18" curves, longer train cars are more likely to derail and don't look as natural.
Start out with a diesel locomotive if you can. The steam versions are much longer and have more wheels.
Be willing to spend some extra money when it comes to the locomotive. Some important features to look for are the weight (metal frame and wheels), a good electric motor, and at least one flywheel at one or both ends of the motor.
Otherwise you could end up having to push start your train to get it started!
Stick to cars with metal wheels on your freight cars and other rolling stock. They look much more realistic as well.
Unless your setting up a larger track with wider turns stay away from passenger cars as they are too long in length and can derail fairly easy.
Once again there is a wide variety of model railroad equipment available. Your sure to find whatever your looking for.
Whether you are discovering model trains because of your child or you're serious about the hobby, take your time at the hobby store. Try out all the accessories you want.
Most of them have a test track available. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. You can prevent many problems in advance by taking the time to ask.
Some hobby stores will let you take the piece home and try it out before you buy it.
Hopefully this information can make your experience better.
No matter what your age, model railroading is a great hobby.
