subject: Inexpensively Heating Your Home [print this page]

Staying warm in your home in the winter can be very costly. You want to make sure that you understand how you are going to stay warm without zeroing out your bank account during those blustery months.

There are a lot of people that do not understand how much heat they are wasting in their home. When you take the time to make your home more energy efficient you will be able to save money on your electric and heating bill.

First, you want to make sure that you do not automatically turn on your heater when you are home. There are many ways that you can stay warm on your own by taking some extra time and preparation.

Of course, you want to make sure that your thermostat is set to at least sixty. There are many people that need their heater set to a higher temperature than sixty to stay warm at all when they are in there home.

Taking the time to find a temperature that is bearable for you and your family is necessary. When you do not set your thermostat to at least sixty you will run the risk of having your pipes freeze and then possibly burst.

When this happens you will have some expensive repairs to deal with. Not only will you have to have the pipe replaced but you may also have some serious water damage to deal with in your home, which can be very costly.

After you find the temperature that is bearable you will want to dress appropriately when you are in your home. Have a pair of warm socks or slippers to wear in your home and also a warm sweatshirt or throw that you can wear.

Staying in your home with only a t-shirt on will make it so that you have to keep your heat much higher. When you are dressed appropriately you will not need your heater to be on as high as when you are dressed in summer clothes.

When you are not interested in bundling up in your own home, you can start looking for a space heater. This will enable you to heat the room that you are staying in instead of heating your entire house.

This works especially well if you are going to be home alone and predominately in a few rooms of your house. Taking the time to figure out which rooms you want to heat and which you do not will be very beneficial.

The less of the heat that you use the more cost efficient your bills will be at the end of the month. As you are heating your home you want to make sure that you are safe with your space heater so you do not end up hurting yourself.

Many of the space heaters are dangerous to touch when they get hot. Make sure that you recognize this and you are careful while you are around the space heater and that anyone that is in your home also knows to be careful.

If you have small children in the home you do not want your space heater to be on the floor. When you put it above the floor you want to make sure that it is not anywhere that it can be pulled down by the child.

You also want to make sure that you do not leave one of these space heaters on overnight. There are many space heaters that you can set to turn off at a specific time or that may be safe to have on all night long.

Make sure you understand the safety limitations of whatever heater you buy. Understanding these limitations will ensure that you and your home are safe while you are using it.

As you are taking the time to understand how you are going to heat your home you want to do some shopping around. Understand how much your electric bill would cost to heat your home and how much a space heater would cost.

There are some space heaters that have been designed to be incredibly efficient while there are others that are not so efficient. You do not want to end up buying heater that will cost more than just using your centralized heating system.

Taking the time to understand how you are going to keep yourself warm is important. You want to be able to be comfortable in your own home but it is also important to remember that this process does not have to be terribly expensive.
