Once upon a time, when pursuing a learners permit, students had to attend lengthy courses either offered during evenings or weekends at traffic schools in order to satisfy the Traffic Laws and Substance Abuse Education course requirement. These courses were expensive and inconvenient and just a general bore. These days, however, the Drug and Alcohol Traffic Awareness course (DATA) and the Florida DMV test can be completed online for less money and with less hassle.
Florida DMV Test: A Diminishing Online Opportunity
In the State of Florida it is required that all person wishing to obtain a learners permit must complete both a Drug and Alcohol Traffic Awareness course as well as the Florida DMV test. Starting in June of 2004 the Florida DMV approved taking the Florida DMV test online ("DMV Test"). This test, which consists of 20 questions regarding road signs and 20 questions regarding road rules, is typically provided online in conjunction with the completion of the DATA course. However, after December 31, 2010, the Florida DMV test will no longer be available online. From that point on students will have to complete the DMV test only at a local Florida DMV office.
Just as is typical of any visit to the DMV you can expect long lines and wait times that will put a halt on your busy day if you have to take the Florida DMV test in person. The best course of action would be to complete the DATA course and Florida DMV test online through an online traffic school while the opportunity is still available, provided you're at least 15 years of age, the requirement for a learners permit in the State of Florida. This will more than likely save you some time in the future, and as we all know, time is frequently money.
