subject: Weight Loss And Sleep - How They Go Together [print this page]

Are you still trying to lose weight and not having very much success? Are you getting a good night sleep? Did you know that you weight loss program may be failing because of your lack of sleep?

There have been scientific studies that have shown that there is a correlation between lack of sleep and gaining weight. The human body has so many interrelated systems, that if any hormone is not functioning properly, it can cause unwanted reactions.

A hormone, cortisol, produced by the adrenal glands regulates appetite. Every day, the body releases both cortisol and adrenaline. Adrenaline gives you energy, it makes you alert, and it speeds up your metabolism. The body uses cortisol to make glucose from proteins, which gives the body energy in times of stress.

If you are having times of stress, your adrenal glands will produce both cortisol and adrenaline, and this will change your metabolism so that, even though you are not hungry and do not need to eat anything, your body will feel hungry. When you are not able to sleep, and it causes you to stress out, you may feel hungry. Maybe this is one reason people eat so much late at night.

Lack of sleep also causes depression, which leads to lack of exercise, and less burning of fat. When you are not getting enough sleep, you can get adrenal fatigue, which also can cause weight gain, because the brain will receive a signal from the body that it needs energy, which results in a craving for sugar or carbohydrates.

A lot of things happen when people do not get a good night sleep. Without sleep the body is in a constant state of stress. Stress will cause lack of sleep, and lack of sleep will cause stress. Both together can cause your body to gain weight. The excess cortisol that is produced from stress, produces too much glucose, which is turned into fat.

If you have been trying to lose weight, and have not been getting enough sleep, you need to find a way to get a restful night of sleep, and eliminate as much stress as possible. It could be that you have started a cycle that needs to be stopped.

There are many things in the world today that cause stress, but there are also many ways to relax. If you are stressing out because of weight gain, you need to realize that your inability to lose weight could be because of the stress.

Sleep is very important.
