Well the answer to that question is, the character isbased on the series co-creator David Hoberman whosays that he based Monk partly on himself,as he also suffered badlywithOCD (ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder) as a teenager.And even today is scared of stairwells and elevators.
PlusMonk is also basedon other fictional detectives, such as Lt. Columbo and Sherlock Holmes.
