New Speed Cameras

Speed cameras have had their fair share of flack over the years, and have been accused of just raising money for councils whose charges are waning.

But a new speed camera has been designed to catch motorists who are committing other offences other than driving. The Asset (advanced safety and driver support for essential road transport) can identify not only when drivers are breaking speed limits, but when they are not wearing their seatbelts, if they have car tax and insurance, and it can also gauge the space between cars to see if drivers are committing tailgating offences.

The campaign group Speed Cameras Dot Org said the devices should not become a replacement for how we traditionally see law enforcement on the roads. A spokesman said: "We cautiously welcome a device that can detect several potential motoring offences, but it remains to be seen how accurate it is and how fairly it will be used.

"The main actions that cause the most accidents, namely not paying attention to the road, misjudging distances and other drivers' intentions, cannot be detected by a device of any sort. More police patrols and better driver education are the only ways to reduce accidents."

The president of the AA has welcomed this, as tailgating is dangerous, and people feel very uncomfortable when in that situation. He feels however that it should not be used to make money, but to protect us.

If you are driving on Britain's roads, make sure you have Car Insurance to protect you.
