How to Use Social Networking to Build Your Law Practice

The key to success in using social networking in your legal practice, is knowing how to use it in the right way. As a successful woman lawyer, I know for a fact that if you properly use it as a business tool, it can transform the way you do business.First, let's look at the difference between "social media" and "social networking". Social media is content that is meant to be shared. It can come in the form of articles, blogs, video, white papers, newsletters, etc. On the other hand, social networking is the actual online communication with others. The Big 3LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitterare all hybrids because these tools share content and facilitate correspondence. One of the greatest benefits of social networking is you can literally participate from anywhere, as long as you have your laptop or a smartphone (Blackberry, iPhone, etc.) The idea behind social media marketing is to brand your business and keep your messages in front of your target audience so they'll contact you. There are some practical Dos for social networking:DO make connections with people that it makes sense to connect with. DO look for people who have similar interests. DO reply to personal messages that people send. DO understand how to use the social networking platform. DO say interesting, conversational things. DO ask questions when you need an answer. DO respond generously when you have an answer. DO think before you post something. DO correct any errors in a prompt manner. DO have a welcoming, natural, authentic voice. DO congratulate or send well wishes to others. DO make it easy for people to contact you. DO follow all the terms and conditions of the social media site. And of course, on the other side, we have the Don'ts:DON'T share anything you don't want others to know. DON'T use automated messages to reply to others. DON'T feel like you have to use every app that someone sends you. DON'T be a bore. DON'T dominate every conversation. DON'T focus too much on yourself. DON'T be too controversial.Remember, the networking strategy ideal is to be visible, and visibility requires regular and consistent participation. If the idea of social networking seems overwhelming, keep this in mind: it's not about the technology, it's all about communication. Right now, 93% of Americans believe that businesses should have a social networking presence. If you aren't using any social media, is it possible you could be left behind? If you're ready to jump in, or have been dabbling here and there, here are 3 key ways to become popular in social networking:1. Listen to what others have to say. In social networking, listening is akin to "lurking" or being a silent observer of what is going on. You can learn an enormous amount just by watching what others do. If you know someone who effectively uses social networking, copy what he or she does. You'll save yourself a lot of time and effort if someone else is showing you the ropes.2. Share what you know. Share your knowledge, your skills and your time with other people in your network. People will sing your praises, recommend you to their friends, and remember you when they need an attorney.3. Have a good time. If you're not having fun, you'll stop networking and you won't do well. But if you have fun, your network will grow and you'll be a social superstar! To all the aspiring women attorneys, now get out there and make those precious connectionsyou'll be glad you did!
