Fluvanna Gold Dominates Fluvanna Blue 45-0 in TJYFL Semi-Finals

Dr. Greg Domecq

Two teams from Fluvanna County made it to the 12U Governors TJYFL playoffs, but only one would advance to next Sunday's championship game as both the Gold and Blue teams were pitted against each other in the league's semi-final. After four twelve minute quarters, the 45 0 convincing Gold victory left no doubt as to who was the best team in Fluvanna County and who will have the opportunity to face the Charlottesville Black Knights, 20-14 victors over the Albemarle Patriots, in the championship game.

The Gold team scored early and scored often in several different ways. Jay Amos continued his assault on the record books scoring on both inside and outside runs of 45 yards, 80 yards, and 50 yards during a first half that saw the Gold Flucos build a 18-0 lead with 1:24 left. The Blue team's offense was stymied time and time again as the well-disciplined Fluvanna Gold defensive line of Anthony Madison, Da'Shon Carter, Trevor Haslip, Shemar Williams, and Jimmy Dillahunt made Fluvanna Blue yardage and first downs as scarce as weeds in the St. Anne's turf field. On their last drive of the first half, Fluvanna Blue could not manage a first down and turned it over on downs near midfield giving the Gold team 14 seconds before the break. After a sack by Blue's Cole Craig, the Gold Team called timeout and set up a trick-play that resulted in a 56 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Derek Domecq to Jameel Wilson. After Caleb Grimes added the extra point, Fluvanna Gold took a 25-0 lead into the break.

"That was the same play that Western Albemarle used to beat Monticello for the Jefferson District title in 2004," said Derek Domecq. "We've practiced it all year, but this is the first chance we had to run it in a game. Jameel did a great job of getting open and taking it to the house."

The second half was not much different from the first as Caleb Grimes, Jameel Wilson, and Jay Amos scored on 38, 54, and 30 yard runs respectively. "I was very proud that we were able to score touchdowns with our second-team offensive line in place," said head coach Ricky Grimes. "Kyron Washington, Hasaan Anderson, Shaun Cobb, Alex Logan, Drake Windingland, Ben Godfrey, Camden McDonald, and Jarret Krett did a great job when they had the opportunity."

The Fluvanna Gold victory sets up a repeat of the regular season championship game just a week ago that was won by the Gold team against Charlottesville 12-6. "Their speed, quickness, and toughness at every position makes them difficult to defend," said Fluvanna Gold defensive coordinator Jamie Symmers. "We will have to play our best to beat them."

The championship game between the Fluvanna County Gold Team and the Charlottesville Black Knights is scheduled for 4pm at the turf field at St. Anne's Belfield. The Fluvanna Blue Team and the Albemarle Patriots will play the consolation game in the first game of the doubleheader at 2:30.
